Becoming an Ambassador.

 

In November, I became a Lululemon Ambassador for the Carindale Store here in Brisbane. This is something I am very excited about and proud of. It’s a privilege to be a part of such a brilliant team and company. I am often asked, “what does that even mean?”. “What is Lululemon?”.

Lululemon is a Canadian based brand, well known for their yoga and fitness clothing, with strong investments in performance fabrics, community, lifestyle and wellness. Their core values stem from their fundamental base of yoga, but Lululemon is much more than that.

My love affair for Lululemon, their products and philosophy began on a ski trip in 2010, where my good friend Kristen convinced me to part with a small fortune in their Queenstown, New Zealand Store. I needed some new ski under layers, and some running gear as I’d just started to get fit again. I was mesmerised by the styles, variety and comfort of their clothing. There was something for everyone, and I couldn’t get enough. The staff in-store were friendly and helpful. Something was different about this brand, and I wasn’t sure what.

As I launched back into my athletics career, I visited another Lululemon store for more clothes, (The clothes had performed very well for me, and hadn’t worn out). Yet again, everyone was incredibly friendly, personal and fun. There seemed to always be an event on, and someone about for a chat.  I was pretty intimidated by the friendliness of the staff and the whole yoga culture. It seemed foreign, but I think in hindsight, that perception was more reflective of where I was as a person at that point of my life, and I had a lot of development ahead of me.

When I moved to Brisbane, I didn’t have many friends, so I immersed myself in work, training and competitions. I first connected with Lululemon Carindale as a customer, looking for fun and functional things to wear to my competitions. I would often pop in to say hi, or grab something. I was still a little confused, as everyone working there was friendly, and genuinely interested in what I was up to. (The staff are affectionately called ‘lemons’ or ‘lulu’s’). They are diverse, vibrant people, and a five minute visit became a half hour conversation very easily. I began to learn more about the people that worked there, their interests and what makes them tick. Each person has something inspiring about them, and something that they are passionate about. I felt that we shared similar values in regards to achieving goals and expanding our views and skill sets, and began to get involved with a few events that they ran in and out of store.

Over time, I relaxed into this Lulu Culture, and as cliche as it sounds, found a place and group of people that made me feel included and valued. These people are more than a shop front, they have become my friends and mentors, offering endless love support and encouragement towards myself and others who are passionate about what they do. In turn, I love sharing my journey, thoughts and encouragement with them too.

I am still learning more about Lululemon, the brand, structure and values, I hope to be able to shed some light on what it means to have the support of the company as an Ambassador and elite athlete.
